Dry Skin   [top]

The most common skin condition is dry skin, a condition that affects nearly all of us. For some it is seasonal and for others it is a condition that recurs or is prevalent all year round such as eczema or atopic dermatitis. Dry skin can be annoying and uncomfortable due to the flaking of the skin and intense itching. It is also more prone to bacterial invasion, which can lead to further skin problems.

Common causes of dry skin:

  • A breakdown in the skin’s natural moisture-retaining barrier, leading to loss of moisture
  • Prolonged bathing or showering with hot water
  • Prolonged and excessive use of soaps – these can remove lipids from the skin and may increase dry skin conditions
  • Low humidity
  • The side effects – some medicines such as those prescribed for acne and wrinkles can lead to symptoms such as dryness, redness and skin irritation
  • Malnutrition or physical damage to the upper layer of skin (Stratum Corneum)
  • Using heaters or wood fires, or sleeping with the electric blanket turned on

Skin Allergies   [top]

Skin allergies can often be caused by common ingredients found in skin care products such as lanolin, colour and perfume. This can result in a ‘flare up’ of sensitive skin causing the skin to become red, itchy and inflamed. Tracking the offending substance which causes the allergy can be difficult. If you have skin that is prone to allergies, it is best to avoid skin care products that contain perfume, colour and lanolin. These are common ingredients that can be potential skin irritants. Use products that are marked hypoallergenic. If you have a tendency to react to skin care products, always try out new products with a patch test in the crook of your arm and wait twenty-four hours to see if they suit your skin.

All Skin Basics products are hypoallergenic and free of colour, perfume and do not contain lanolin.

Dermatological conditions such as eczema and other dermatitis   [top]

Eczema is a form of dermatitis where the top layer of the skin becomes inflamed. Typically, the skin becomes dry, red, intensely itchy and may crack, crust, flake, blister or bleed. Constant moisturising with a simple non-greasy, hypoallergenic cream such as Skin Basics Sorbolene Cream with 10% Glycerinemay help. Use cleansers that are soap free and mild on the skin such as Skin Basics Everyday Face & Body Wash, as ordinary soaps can aggravate the condition. In more severe cases, stronger creams may be needed.

Nappy or urinary rash   [top]

Nappy or urinary rash can occur in infants due to prolonged exposure to dampness in the nappy area. This increases the skin pH caused by urine and faeces causing a breakdown of upper layers of the skin. The affected area becomes red, inflamed and irritated. If severe, this can lead to bacterial and fungal infection which will need to be treated. Nappy or urinary rash can avoided by applyingSkin Basics Zinc & Castor Oil Cream at each nappy change to protect baby’s delicate skin.
